But The Outlast Trials moves much of the series' MO into a co-op environment. Outlast has always been so relentless and engrossing. That was the central question I posed to co-founder and game designer at developer Red Barrels, Philippe Morin, when we recently spoke via email. Can The Outlast Trials make me feel that way again? In the end, I got my work done on time-at the cost of some psychological distress. The game's terrifying cult at the center, purposely dizzying level design, and powerless protagonist combined to haunt me in a way that even the memorable original game did not. Up against the review embargo and needing to finish my assignment, I cut it very close because the game was so tense and unnerving that I found it hard to return to whenever I'd step away.

The Outlast Trials is out in 2022 and you can check out the new trailer below and wishlist the game here.In all my years of playing horror games, one of my strongest memories is from 2017, when Outlast 2 scared me to the point of a professional quandary. It looks way more like Outlast original and I think that’s the aesthetic to follow. Thankfully, it was fairly well received and we’re getting this sequel.

It leaned too hard on the grimdark edge that the first game touched on but never fully embraced. The run and hide gameplay was tight and dread-inducing.Ī sequel, Outlast 2 was released a few years later and I personally did not like it. It was the first game to work off of and improve the formula popularized by Amnesia. It took you to some severely dark places. It saw you playing as a journalist investigating strange claims coming out of the Mount Massive Asylum. The original Outlast was released in 2013 to great acclaim. Things as simple as holding out a hand to help another player jump over a gap show great promise in reiterating the Outlast formula to appeal to a new playerbase. The gameplay showcased some of the team tactics that will be on display in the full game. The gameplay trailer ends with the tagline “we’re all in this together”. It looks like we’re returning to the Mount Massive Asylum, or an area very much like it, for these trials.

The new gameplay shown in a trailer today showed off more of the world of The Outlast Trials. A multiplayer Outlast game featuring the ability to actually hurt the monstrosities that are hunting you. I can do without Outlast 2 honestly, but that’s a personal preference. The Outlast Trials is Multiplayer Outlast, Coming Out in 2022
