I ran every Saturday for the past 10 weeks to honor Corporal Jeremy Thompson. And these relationships last well beyond the 10-week training and mentorship program that culminated in a Memorial Day 5K. I, and the other mentors, met up for several hours within an established “Saturday Run Community” and simply spent time with these children, listened to whatever was on their mind, and let them know their parents’ sacrifice was not forgotten and that there were people in their community who cared about them and were there for them. For the past 10 weeks, I have had the privilege of serving as a mentor as part of wear blue: run to remember’s Gold Star Youth Mentorship Program.įor 10 Saturdays, I got to spend time with a kiddo who lost his father at a very young age.
